GIS Analysis
Click here for a brief presentation on the creation of the spatial data used in the
Early Indicators project. The presentation explains the process of making the historical maps used in the project and discusses their usefulness.
Note: all maps created as part of the Early Indicators project are compatible with each other because they use the same coordinate projection system. Users are cautioned that third-party maps created with an alternative projection system may not be perfectly compatible.
United States County Maps
These maps feature all state and county boundaries for a given year. They are to be used in spatial data analysis software. These maps can be used
in conjunction with the Union Army location data and other geographic data that will be made available by the Early Indicators project.
Historical City Maps: GIS
The complete set of ward and street maps for the eight cities used for our urban project is below. Files are grouped by city in .ZIP format. These files require GIS software for use. Please note that the street maps are intended for data analysis purposes and are not maps of each city at any one point in time; see the above presentation for more information.
Historical City Maps: PDF Format
For those who are interested in the maps but do not have access to GIS software, the maps are available in .PDF format below. These maps cannot be used
for data analysis and are only for illustrative purposes. Streets are labeled; use the zoom function to see individual street names.
Union Army Veteran Location Data
This data is currently being updated and will be loaded on the website as soon as it is available.
Special thanks go to our undergraduate research assistants Lukasz Chumra, Cristina Iftimie, Paul Kremsky, Alec Brandon and Sung Eun. Without their dedication and excellent attention to detail, we could not have completed this project.
If you have any questions regarding this project, please contact
