  • Sok Chul Hong Gains Special Recognition

    CPE Researcher Sok Chul Hong has earned special recognition from the Journal of American History for his recently published paper in the Journal of Economic History. The criteria for the recognition, known as "recent scholarship," can be read here.

  • CPE Researcher Locates Important Lincoln Document

    CPE researcher, AJ Aiseirithe, recently discovered a long-lost, 4-page letter written by Abraham Lincoln in an obscure file buried in the National Archives’ vaults in College Park, Maryland. The letter was written by Lincoln on October 22, 1864. In the letter he explains his reasons for not meddling in a political dispute involving his vice presidential running mate and military governor of Tennessee, Andrew Johnson.   • New Program Coordinator Joins CPE

    The CPE is very pleased to announce that Lewis Meineke has joined the staff as program coordinator. After earning his bachelor’s degree in economics from Reed College this past June, Lewis returned to the Chicago area and has been polishing his advanced math skills at UIC. He learned mapping techniques for his senior thesis, “The Contagion Effect of Housing Abandonment in Philadelphia.”

    Lewis will be working closely on our mapping projects with Carlos Villarreal who is currently in the economics Ph.D. program at UIC, but still also working part time with the CPE. He will assume major responsibility for identifying/locating, planning, and overseeing the retrieval, and entry of, historical public health data around the country.

  • The Enid Fogel Diversity Scholarship

    The University of Chicago Graduate School of Business recently announced that it has created a new scholarship fund to augment existing diversity scholarships. To get more detailed information about this scholarship that has been named after Enid Fogel, please click here.

  • Enid M. Fogel, 1923-2007

    It is with heavy hearts that the CPE wishes to inform you that on September 2 Enid M. Fogel, beloved wife of Professor Robert Fogel, passed away at the University of Chicago Hospitals. She was surrounded by her loving family at the time of her death. For more information, please click here.

  • Hong Joins CPE Staff

    Sok Chul Hong, who has served ably as a graduate research assistant at the CPE since 2004, has joined our full-time staff as Senior Research Associate. In June, Hong was awarded his Ph.D. in economics by the University of Chicago.

    Hong will continue to work closely with Professor Fogel on the Early Indicators of Later Work Levels, Disease and Death project as well as with our colleagues Hoyt Bleakley and Lou Cain. He can be reached at 773-834-8822 or by email at hongs@cpe.uchicago.edu

  • Union Army Research "Makes the Cover"

  • Fogel Receives Indispensable Person of the Year Award

    The Alliance for Aging Research recently awarded Professor Robert Fogel as the 2006 Indispensable Person of the Year. The award was presented in Washington, DC on September 12 at a dinner celebrating the Alliance's 20th anniversary. This award was given in recognition of Fogel's "efforts to achieve healthier aging."   • Troesken Wins Book Prize
    Werner Troesken, CPE senior investigator, was awarded the Alice Hanson Jones Prize for his book, Water, Race, and Disease (MIT Press, 2004). The Jones Prize is a biennial award presented to the author of an outstanding book in North American (including Caribbean) economic history. The award ceremony took place at the 2006 annual meetings of the Economic History Association in September. Troesken received his award jointly with B. Zorina Khan, who won for her book on patents and copyrights. The two recipients were selected from 43 nominations submitted for the Prize.

  • Additional Surgeon's Certificates Information Now Available

    There are now mock-up samples of surgeon's certificates available on the CPE website. These samples also include a detailed discussion of the information contained on each form. Click here to view the forms.

  • CPE Working Paper Series

  • The CPE has begun a new series of working papers. These papers will elaborate mainly on current findings by our project investigators and members of our research group. Free downloadable copies of these papers are available by selecting the "Working Papers" link from the menu on the CPE Publications Archive page.
