Text Box: For a year, longtime CPE editorial assistant Susan Jones worked both at the CPE and at Argonne National Laboratories in Batavia, Illinois, where she honed her skills in GIS (“geographic information systems.”) In October, she accepted a full-time position at Argonne as a GIS analyst. Jones, a student of medieval Russian history, joined the Center for Population Economics as an editorial assistant in 1989, making her the staffer with the longest tenure since Marilyn Coopersmith.

The CPE’s international array of faculty and other researchers, staff, and students--not to mention director Robert Fogel--all depended upon her authoritative copy- and content-editing skills and firm guidance in composition and clarity. She also served as Center librarian, bibliographer, historian, and archivist, all areas in which she excelled. But most importantly, she was always available to help in any way her wisdom and energy were needed. To wit, she organized the relocation of the entire CPE library in her usual first-rate way, creating a finding aid to help locate the books and files in their new home.  Although she’s welcome to return to the CPE any time, we admire her for pursuing her love of advanced computer-aided mapping!

We’re delighted to welcome Tom Chappelear, who in late October assumed Susan Jones’ responsibilities as Editorial Assistant at the CPE. Chappelear is a PhD candidate in history at the University of Chicago, writing on American postwar business history. As part of his own work he’s done CPE-style archival research, in keeping with a major theme of the CPE. He also copy-edited for ChinaOnline, a background especially helpful to CPE director Robert Fogel’s current work.  Of joining us, Chappelear says, “I am thrilled to be working at the CPE, and am looking forward to figuring out what r-squared means.” You can reach him at Thomas.Chappelear@ChicagoGSB.edu.  He and AJ (Amy)  Aiseirithe can also be contacted at (773) 834-5388.

Chappelear on the job.
