Subsidiary Union Army Veterans Datasets

A number of aggregate datasets of various types have been created in order to provide ecological variables on the Union Army veterans in the life-cycle datasets. These variables are of two main types: (1)variables describing the characteristics of localities where the veterans lived or spent time; (2)variables describing the companies in which the veterans served. Variables of type (1) available include information on disease rates from 1828-1854 in different localities, demographic and topographical information on U.S. towns and cities from 1880-1916, mortality rates by county from 1850-1880, public spending and organization from 1880-1916. As a sample of this information, click here to view a set of maps of malaria prevalence rates from 1828-1839 for the eastern half of the U.S. Variables of type (2) which are available include information on casualties per company, mean strength, battles fought, geographical movements, and actions performed.
